Psycho Cat

By Brinna J. Adair

In the summer of 1990, was born a kitten, part Calico and part Manx. With his long white whiskers and bobbed tail, his new mistress, Barb named him, Mr. Whiskers. He was the sweetest little fellow for many years, bringing much joy and pleasure to her household.

During the past two summers, though Mr. Whiskers was kept in doors, he became plagued with fleas. Little did Barb know that this animal would have such violent reactions to the flea dips and sprays, that would rid him and the house of these biting, disease carrying pests. Each time he was dipped, or the house was sprayed, he became more and more violent and would start attacking her guest's feet, and hands, occasionally even attacking her.

Now, in the summer of 1999, Barb had to be hospitalized for a few days and her sister, Carly offered to take care of Mr. Whiskers, and Barb, for two weeks after she was released from the hospital. A friend of Carly's, Willow, was also visiting during this time. It was at this time that Mr. Whiskers turned into... Psycho Cat.

It was a stormy afternoon in North Branch, Minnesota, where Carly lived. Rain was pouring down in buckets, then the sky became a deep gray-green and hail began to pounding down and the winds began to howl. Looking out a western window, they saw a tornado coming, right towards them, and were forced into the cellar. There… at the bottom of the stairs, was... Psycho Cat!

Being the first to reach the stairs, Psycho Cat attacked Carly, clawing and ripping at her face and neck. Grabbing the cat, Barb hoped to calm him, instead he turned on her, ripping at her arms and chest, as she held him by the back of his neck. Breaking free, he went for Willow, tearing at her legs, as he climbed them to her stomach.

Coming up with a plan, Carly and Barb took action, to protect themselves. Grabbing Psycho Cat, Barb struggled with him, as Carly opened the cellar door to the outside. Just as the tornado was passing by, Barb threw her once, sweet pet out, causing him to be sucked up into the vortex of the tornado, that continued to roar on through Minnesota, to eastern Wisconsin.

When the storm was over, Willow, being the only one who could see to drive, rushed them to the hospital in Cambridge, the next town over. They were all admitted and their wounds are tended to, by a plastic surgeon, who was so good, that when the women healed, there was not a trace of a scar from their terrible ordeal.

Soon after, reports began coming in from eastern Wisconsin, of a whole family being eaten alive, with only their bones remaining. Investigators said, the Hodgeson’s had a cat and in its feces, were found human remains, yet the cat was never found.

Similar reports continued coming in at two months intervals, moving westward across the state of Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota. All the reports were the same, with human remains found in the cat’s feces, yet in all twelve instances, the cat was never found, yet the paw prints became larger each time a family was devoured. Thoughts of Mr. Whiskers would cross Barb's mind with each report, wondering if this could be him, devouring these unsuspecting families.

One year later, Carly, Barb, and Willow were together again, sharing their horrifying adventure with the tornado and Psycho Cat. While sitting out on the patio that evening, Barb noticed across the field a large animal, looking much like a large bobcat. Yet, upon closer examination, recognized this beast as her once loveable, Mr. Whiskers.

Alerting the others, Carly ran in to get her husband’s shot gun, while Barb and Willow ran into the house with Psycho Cat, hot on their heels. Quickly, they slammed the door behind them, catching his paw in it.

Letting out an ear-piercing howl, Psycho Cat began ripping at the door, tearing off the piece where his paw was trapped. Then, he began ripping at the door, as Willow and Barb tried desperately to hold it shut.

By the time Carly returned with the loaded shotgun, Psycho Cat had ripped a hole in the middle of the door. Ordering Barb and Willow to stand aside, Carly aimed and fired the shot gun, only wounding his front right leg.

More frantic than before, Psycho Cat continued to rip away at the hole in the door. Crouching down, Carly cocked the shotgun, taking careful aim. When the cat was in her sights, she fired once, then again. With the first shot hitting Psycho Cat in the chest, he howled in pain and hissed. When the second shot hit him between the eyes, he jolted back thrashing around on the ground, then stared into Barb's eyes, with a look of peaceful recognition; Mr. Whiskers took his last breath and died.

Feeling so much sympathy for her once sweet pet, Barb went out, stroking his soft fur and cried for his unfortunate demises. All along, knowing that if it hadn't been for the flea dips and insecticides used to rid her home of fleas, that Mr. Whiskers would have never become, Psycho Cat.

Taking a shovel, Barb dug a hole out by the field, burying her once beloved pet and shedding many tears, for his passing.
